Description

A dramatic Baroque painting by Artemisia Gentileschi, depicting Judith and her maidservant in the moments following the death of Holofernes.

Artemisia Gentileschi depicts the biblical narrative of Judith, who has just decapitated the Assyrian general Holofernes. The composition focuses on the immediate aftermath of the act, rather than the violence itself. Judith stands with a sword in her right hand, while her maidservant, Abra, holds a basket containing the severed head. Both figures look towards the left, their expressions conveying a sense of urgency and caution as they prepare to depart the tent. Gentileschi employs tenebrism, a technique defined by strong contrasts between light and shadow. A single light source illuminates the figures against a dark, indistinct background, which draws attention to the texture of their garments and the tension in their postures. The heavy, folds of the maidservant's yellow dress and the dark, embroidered bodice worn by Judith are rendered with precision. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to handle complex psychological states through physical gesture and gaze. This work is one of several versions Gentileschi produced on the subject. It reflects the influence of Caravaggio, particularly in the use of dramatic lighting and the naturalistic depiction of the figures. Unlike many contemporary interpretations of this story, which often portrayed Judith as a passive or idealized figure, Gentileschi presents her as a woman of physical strength and resolve. The focus remains on the collaborative effort between the two women, as they navigate the danger of their situation. The painting is currently housed in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, where it continues to be studied for its technical execution and its departure from traditional gendered representations of the period.
