A sixteenth-century Flemish engraving depicting the biblical figure Joseph, rendered with precise hatching and classical composition.
This engraving depicts the biblical figure Joseph, rendered in the characteristic style of the late sixteenth-century Flemish school. Christoffel Plantijn, primarily known as a printer and publisher, oversaw the production of numerous illustrated volumes during his tenure in Antwerp. This work reflects the technical precision of the period, employing fine hatching and cross-hatching to define the volume of the figure and the texture of his garments.
The composition places Joseph in a central, standing position, dressed in an elaborate tunic and cloak that suggest a blend of historical and contemporary sixteenth-century interpretation. His posture is balanced, with one hand raised in a gesture of address. In the background, a fortified structure sits atop a hill, providing a sense of distance and context to the scene. The framing is achieved through a simple, decorative border, which was a common feature in printed book illustrations of the era.
Plantijn's workshop was a centre for humanistic study and artistic output. The print demonstrates the meticulous attention to detail required for copperplate engraving, a medium that allowed for the mass distribution of religious and historical narratives. The figure's attire, particularly the patterned trousers and the ornate belt, shows the influence of contemporary fashion on the depiction of ancient subjects. The overall execution is clean, focusing on clarity of form and the narrative quality of the subject matter. This print serves as an example of the intersection between early modern printing technology and the visual storytelling traditions that defined the period.
