A hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical figures Joseph and Benjamin in the style of Northern Mannerism.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical figures Joseph and Benjamin. As a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers, Johann was active in Antwerp, Munich, and Prague, producing works that circulated widely across Europe. This piece reflects the stylistic conventions of late sixteenth-century Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures, expressive poses, and a focus on narrative clarity within a structured composition.
The print is divided into two distinct panels. On the left, Joseph is portrayed as a young man holding a bow and arrows, dressed in a blue tunic with a magenta cloak. The background features architectural elements and a small figure in the distance, providing a sense of spatial depth. On the right, Benjamin is shown in a more pastoral setting, wearing a purple tunic and a bright orange mantle. He is accompanied by a wolf and a lamb, referencing the biblical prophecy concerning his lineage. The figures exhibit the muscularity and anatomical focus typical of the period, influenced by Italian Renaissance models that were then being adapted by Northern European artists.
The application of colour, likely added by hand after the initial printing, enhances the narrative distinction between the two brothers. The Latin inscriptions at the base of each figure provide context, identifying the subjects and referencing their roles within the Genesis narrative. The work demonstrates the technical precision of the Sadeler workshop, which was known for its ability to translate complex theological and historical subjects into accessible visual formats. This print offers a glimpse into the print culture of the late Renaissance, where religious iconography was frequently disseminated through high-quality engravings for collectors and scholars alike.
