Boris Kustodiev, a painter associated with the World of Art group, produced this circular composition in 1912. The work depicts the historical annexation of the Kazan Khanate by the Tsardom of Russia, rendered through a lens of theatrical allegory. Kustodiev employs a dense, crowded arrangement of figures to convey the scale of the military encounter. In the centre, a commander in classical-style armour gestures towards the unfolding scene, acting as the primary focus for the viewer.

The composition is contained within a tondo, a format that encourages a self-contained, almost medallion-like quality. The artist uses a dark, moody palette, with deep shadows obscuring the edges of the frame, which draws the eye toward the illuminated figures in the middle ground.
