A refined copperplate engraving by Johann Friedrich Bause, portraying the pioneering art historian Johann Joachim Winckelmann in a formal oval frame.
This copperplate engraving by Johann Friedrich Bause depicts the influential German art historian and archaeologist Johann Joachim Winckelmann. Bause, a highly skilled printmaker based in Leipzig, produced this work in 1792, drawing inspiration from an earlier portrait by Anton Raphael Mengs. The composition presents Winckelmann within a formal oval frame, a common convention for eighteenth-century portraiture that lends a sense of gravity to the subject.
Winckelmann is shown wearing a turban and a fur-trimmed garment, an attire that reflects the intellectual fashion of the period. His expression is calm and contemplative, suggesting the scholarly rigour he applied to his study of ancient Greek art. The engraving technique demonstrates Bause's precision, particularly in the rendering of the fur texture and the subtle gradations of light across the sitter's face. Below the portrait, a stone-effect cartouche bears the inscription 'IOH. WINKELMAN', providing a clear identification of the subject.
As a printmaker, Bause was known for his ability to translate the nuances of painted portraits into the medium of engraving. This work captures the intellectual spirit of the Enlightenment, a period when the study of classical antiquity reached a new level of academic scrutiny. The print is a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by German engravers during the late eighteenth century. It offers a window into the visual culture of the era, where the likenesses of scholars and thinkers were disseminated through high-quality prints to a wider audience of collectors and admirers of classical learning. The monochromatic palette and clean lines reflect the aesthetic values of the Neoclassical movement, prioritising clarity and structural integrity over decorative excess.
