A masterful 16th-century engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, reproducing the prophet Joel from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.
This engraving by Giorgio Ghisi reproduces the figure of the prophet Joel from Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling. Ghisi, a master of the burin, translates the monumental scale of the original fresco into the precise, linear medium of printmaking. The composition centres on the prophet, who is depicted in a seated posture, reading a scroll. He is flanked by architectural elements and smaller figures, known as ignudi, which populate the spandrels of the ceiling.
Ghisi employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to replicate the sculptural volume of Michelangelo's figures. The play of light and shadow across the drapery and musculature demonstrates the technical control required to interpret fresco painting through engraving. The inclusion of the name 'IOEL' on the central cartouche identifies the subject, while the surrounding decorative motifs reflect the architectural framework of the Vatican commission.
As a printmaker, Ghisi was instrumental in disseminating the visual language of the Italian High Renaissance to a wider European audience. By capturing the tension and physical presence of the original work, this print offers a detailed study of Michelangelo's anatomical precision. The engraving maintains a balance between the grandiosity of the source material and the constraints of the copper plate. It remains a significant example of sixteenth-century reproductive printmaking, where the engraver acts as both a technician and an interpreter of the original artist's vision. The work demonstrates the Mannerist interest in complex poses and the integration of human figures into architectural settings, providing a clear view of the structural logic inherent in the Sistine Chapel ceiling design.
