A detailed 1782 portrait engraving of the French engineer Jean Rodolphe Perronet, rendered with technical precision by Augustin de Saint-Aubin.
This portrait engraving by Augustin de Saint-Aubin depicts Jean Rodolphe Perronet, the celebrated French architect and structural engineer. Perronet is best known for his work on the design and construction of numerous bridges in 18th-century France, including the Pont de la Concorde in Paris. The composition presents the subject within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame, a common device in the period to suggest a three-dimensional bust or medallion. Saint-Aubin employs precise, controlled lines to render the textures of Perronet's coat, the lace at his cuffs, and the subtle modelling of his features.
The lower section of the print features a rectangular tablet containing a Latin inscription, which identifies Perronet and acknowledges his contributions to public works and the Royal Academy. The inclusion of drafting tools on the table before him serves as a direct reference to his professional identity as an engineer. Saint-Aubin, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the varied density of the cross-hatching, which creates a sense of depth and volume within the confined space of the oval. The work reflects the formal conventions of late 18th-century portraiture, where the subject is presented with a sense of gravity and intellectual purpose. The print is an example of the high level of craftsmanship associated with the French school of engraving during the Enlightenment, prioritising clarity, anatomical accuracy, and a balanced arrangement of elements. The monochromatic palette and the architectural framing reinforce the formal nature of the portrait, suitable for a scholarly or professional setting.
