A satirical lithographic portrait of Jean Jacques Fayet by the French master of caricature, Honoré Daumier.
Honoré Daumier was a master of the satirical portrait, using his lithographic skills to critique the social and political figures of nineteenth-century France. This work depicts Jean Jacques Fayet, the Bishop of Orléans, rendered with the characteristic exaggeration that defined Daumier's approach to caricature. By distorting the physical features of his subject, Daumier captures a sense of personality and moral posture that a standard portrait might miss.
The composition is stark and focused. The Bishop is shown in a standing position, his arm extended toward a pedestal, a gesture that suggests a performative or authoritative act. Daumier employs a precise use of shading and line to define the folds of the ecclesiastical robes and the heavy, expressive features of the face. The background remains minimal, ensuring that the viewer's attention stays on the figure and his singular, somewhat absurd action.
Daumier produced this work during a period of significant political upheaval in France. His contributions to journals like Le Charivari allowed him to reach a wide audience, providing a visual commentary on the clergy and the ruling classes. This print demonstrates his ability to combine technical skill with a sharp, observational wit. The lithographic process allows for a soft, tonal quality that mimics the appearance of a charcoal drawing, adding a sense of immediacy to the image. It is a fine example of how Daumier used the medium of print to engage with the public discourse of his time, offering a view of authority that is both human and deeply flawed.
