A delicate etching and aquatint by Félix Hilaire Buhot, capturing a hunter and his dog in the soft, hazy light of a sunrise.
Félix Hilaire Buhot was a master of the etching medium, known for his experimental approach to printmaking. This work, titled Jager met hond in een landschap bij zonsopkomst, demonstrates his ability to capture atmospheric conditions through subtle tonal variations. The scene depicts a lone hunter accompanied by his dog, moving through a marshy area at the break of day. The sun, a pale orb on the horizon, provides the primary light source, casting long, soft shadows across the foreground.
Buhot utilised aquatint to create the hazy, diffused quality of the morning air. The vertical lines of the trees provide a rhythmic structure that contrasts with the horizontal expanse of the water and field. His technique involves a delicate balance of line work and wash-like effects, which gives the print a painterly quality. The composition is contained within a defined rectangular plate mark, yet the artist allowed the ink to bleed into the margins, a characteristic feature of his printing style that adds a sense of spontaneity to the final image.
As a printmaker, Buhot often revisited his plates, adding new elements or adjusting the ink density in subsequent states. This particular impression shows the quiet, solitary nature of the rural environment he frequently explored. The muted palette and soft focus invite the viewer to observe the stillness of the morning. By focusing on the interplay of light and shadow, Buhot conveys the mood of the environment rather than merely documenting the physical geography. This print is a representative example of his technical skill and his interest in the evocative potential of black and white imagery.
