James Tissot, a French painter active in the second half of the 19th century, created this watercolour illustration depicting a scene from the Book of Judges. The subject is Jael's slaying of Sisera. Sisera, a defeated Canaanite general, sought refuge in the tent of Jael, who appeared to offer him hospitality. While he slept, Jael drove a tent peg through his temple, thus fulfilling a prophecy and delivering Israel from oppression. Tissot's work is part of a series illustrating the Old Testament. The composition shows the interior of a tent, rendered in muted earth tones and blues. Jael, in a blue dress and white head covering, is shown in the act of hammering the tent peg into Sisera's head. Sisera lies prone on a patterned rug, his face contorted in pain. The scene is lit by a light source from above, possibly an opening in the tent, which casts a bright light on the figures. The details of the tent's interior, including the patterned textiles and the texture of the tent walls, are carefully rendered, adding to the dramatic intensity of the scene.
