An eighteenth-century portrait engraving by Jacobus Houbraken, depicting the historian Jean Rousset de Missy with technical precision and formal elegance.
This engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicts Jean Rousset de Missy, a notable historian and publicist of the eighteenth century. Houbraken, a master of the Dutch school of engraving, demonstrates his technical precision in this portrait. The work is based on an original painting by J. Fournier, dated 1747, which Houbraken translated into the medium of copperplate engraving with characteristic clarity and control.
The portrait captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a powdered wig and a heavy, draped coat. Houbraken employs a sophisticated system of cross-hatching and stippling to render the textures of the fabric and the soft contours of the face. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the focus to remain on the sitter. Below the portrait, a cartouche contains a detailed inscription in French, identifying Rousset de Missy and his various titles, including his role as a member of the Academy of Sciences in St Petersburg and the Royal Society of Berlin.
Jacobus Houbraken was highly regarded for his contributions to historical portraiture, particularly his work on the 'Illustrious Heads' series. His ability to convey the likeness and status of his subjects through the disciplined application of line made him a preferred engraver for contemporary scholars and nobility. This print serves as a fine example of the mid-eighteenth-century European tradition of portrait engraving, where the artist balanced the requirements of documentary accuracy with the aesthetic demands of the print medium. The work remains a clear record of the intellectual figures of the Enlightenment era, presented with the formal dignity typical of the period.
