A woodblock print from the Itchō gafu, capturing a scene of travellers sheltering from rain in the distinct, expressive style of Hanabusa Itchō.
This woodblock print originates from the Itchō gafu, a collection of works by the Japanese painter and printmaker Hanabusa Itchō. Active during the Edo period, Itchō was known for his departure from the rigid conventions of the Kanō school, favouring instead the observation of daily life and the customs of common people. His style, often termed fuzokuga, captures the spontaneity of human interaction with a light, expressive touch.
The scene depicts a group of travellers seeking shelter from a sudden downpour. Figures are shown rushing towards a thatched-roof structure, their postures conveying the urgency of the weather. Inside the shelter, others sit in repose, observing the rain. The composition relies on calligraphic line work, where the weight of the ink varies to define the texture of the thatched roof, the gnarled bark of the tree, and the simple garments of the subjects. The diagonal lines representing the rain provide a sense of motion, contrasting with the static, seated figures in the foreground.
Hanabusa Itchō was a versatile artist who spent time in exile on the island of Miyake-jima, an experience that informed his sympathetic portrayal of rural life and itinerant workers. This print demonstrates his ability to distil complex social scenes into clear, readable forms. The lack of heavy shading or colour allows the viewer to focus on the narrative elements and the economy of the artist's brush. As a piece of Edo-period graphic art, it provides a window into the social fabric of the time, documenting the mundane activities of travellers and the atmospheric conditions of the Japanese countryside. The print is a fine example of the woodblock medium, where the precision of the carver preserves the fluidity of the original ink sketch.
