A classic Italianate scene by Simon van der Does, featuring a shepherdess and her flock amidst classical ruins and warm, golden light.
Simon van der Does, a painter active during the latter part of the Dutch Golden Age, produced this work in the Italianate style. This genre was popular among Dutch artists who travelled to Italy and returned with a fascination for the Mediterranean light, classical ruins, and pastoral subjects. The composition features a shepherdess seated near a large tree, accompanied by a child and a collection of livestock, including sheep, goats, and a cow.
In the background, the silhouette of ruined masonry suggests an ancient site, a common motif in Italianate painting intended to evoke a sense of historical continuity and classical antiquity. The lighting is characteristic of the period, with a warm, golden glow emanating from the horizon, casting long shadows across the foreground. The artist employs a balanced arrangement, placing the figures in the lower left quadrant while allowing the eye to travel across the grazing animals toward the distant hills.
The brushwork is controlled and precise, typical of the Dutch tradition, focusing on the textures of the animals' wool and the soft folds of the shepherdess's garments. The inclusion of a classical statue near the tree adds a layer of artifice to the scene, reinforcing the constructed nature of these pastoral visions. Van der Does, the son of the painter Jacob van der Does, maintained a career that bridged the gap between the meticulous detail of his home country and the atmospheric, sun-drenched aesthetic of the Italian countryside. This print captures the quietude of the rural setting, offering a glimpse into the European fascination with the idyllic past.
