A winter scene from the series The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido, depicting travellers navigating the snow-covered path at Itabana Station.
This woodblock print by Keisai Eisen depicts Itabana Station, a stop along the Nakasendo route. It is part of the series titled The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido, a project Eisen worked on alongside Utagawa Hiroshige. The scene captures a winter atmosphere, with heavy snow blanketing the ground, the thatched roofs of the village, and the branches of the pine trees.
Eisen employs a distinct colour palette to convey the cold, quiet stillness of the season. The sky transitions from a deep, dark grey at the top to a soft, warm pink near the horizon, suggesting the fading light of a winter day. A stream flows through the foreground, its blue tones contrasting with the white snow. Several travellers, wearing traditional straw hats and cloaks, make their way through the snowy path. Their figures provide a sense of scale and human presence within the quiet, frozen environment.
The composition is balanced, with the vertical forms of the pine trees creating a rhythm across the middle ground. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in the ukiyo-e process, particularly in the application of colour gradients and the precise carving of the woodblocks. Eisen was known for his work in the bijin-ga genre, but his contributions to this series show his ability to capture atmospheric conditions and the specific character of rural Japanese locations. This print offers a view into the travel culture of the Edo period, documenting the stations that connected the major cities of Japan. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the period, focusing on the interplay between human activity and the natural environment.
