A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers crossing a bridge at the Ishibei station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the station of Ishibei, one of the stops along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition captures a moment of travel, featuring figures crossing a small wooden bridge. Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style, using defined outlines and a restrained colour palette to delineate the travellers and the surrounding terrain.
The print belongs to a series documenting the various locations along this major route. Unlike the more famous series by Utagawa Hiroshige, which often focuses on atmospheric conditions or dramatic weather, Hokusai’s interpretation of the Tokaido stations frequently emphasises the human element of the journey. The figures are rendered with individualised postures, carrying their belongings in packs and bundles, reflecting the daily reality of movement across the Japanese countryside during the Edo period.
The visual structure relies on a balance between the foreground bridge and the rolling hills in the background. The use of flat colour planes, characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, creates a sense of order and clarity. The sky is marked by stylised clouds, a common motif in Hokusai’s work, which provides a decorative rhythm to the upper portion of the print. The scene is devoid of excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the narrative of the travellers as they navigate the path. This print serves as a record of the social and geographical character of the Tokaido road, presented through the distinct aesthetic lens of one of Japan’s most prolific printmakers.
