A detailed 17th-century etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicting a lively scene from the Reynard the Fox fables.
This etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicts a scene from the medieval beast epic, Reynard the Fox. The composition features a gathering of anthropomorphic animals, including Isengrijn the wolf and Bruin the bear, engaged in a festive dance. A cat plays a wind instrument to the left, while other creatures, such as a rabbit and a goat, observe the proceedings. Van Everdingen, a Dutch artist known for his mastery of etching, employs fine, hatched lines to define the textures of animal fur and the surrounding woodland environment.
The narrative derives from the Reynard cycle, a collection of satirical tales popular in European folklore. These stories often used animal characters to critique human behaviour, social hierarchies, and the clergy. Van Everdingen captures the chaotic energy of the scene through dynamic postures and expressive faces. The figures are arranged beneath the boughs of a tree, which provides a sense of enclosure and depth to the composition. The background suggests a distant, hilly terrain, typical of the artist's interest in natural settings.
Technically, the work demonstrates the precision of 17th-century Dutch printmaking. The artist uses varying line weights to create shadow and volume, particularly in the dense fur of the bear and the wolf. The etching process allows for a high degree of detail, from the individual leaves on the branches to the specific features of each animal. This print serves as a visual record of the enduring popularity of the Reynard tales during the Dutch Golden Age, reflecting a period when such allegorical subjects were frequently adapted for both literary and artistic consumption.
