Description
Ironbridge in Shropshire reflects a red iron arch and riverside houses in still green water, with wooded slopes catching gold beneath the warm clouds of an early autumn evening.
The pioneering cast-iron crossing over the Severn was completed in 1779 and opened to traffic in 1781. Built during the Industrial Revolution, it gave its name to the surrounding settlement and gorge, now recognised for their place in the development of modern engineering.
At Ironbridge, a red iron arch enters from the left above a dark, reflective river. White and brick houses rise from stone retaining walls along the opposite bank, with one timber-framed building farther right. Green and gold trees cover the steep hillside behind. Warm cloud and lengthening reflections suggest an evening at the beginning of autumn.
