Created in 1954, this piece belongs to the period when Louis began experimenting with the soak-stain technique. He applied thinned Magna paint directly onto unprimed canvas, allowing the pigment to permeate the fibres rather than sitting on the surface. This method removes the physical presence of the artist's brushwork, creating a flat, unified image where colour and support become one.

The composition of Iris features vertical bands of colour that bleed into one another. The palette consists of muted earth tones, including soft ochres, deep greens, and subtle pinks. These hues appear to flow downwards, suggesting a sense of gravity and movement. By avoiding traditional forms or representational subjects, Louis focuses the viewer on the interaction of the pigments themselves. The unpainted areas of the canvas act as a frame, allowing the colour to breathe and expand within the space.

Louis was influenced by the work of Helen Frankenthaler, particularly her 1952 painting Mountains and Sea.
