A detailed allegorical study of Invidia by German Renaissance master Heinrich Aldegrever, featuring symbolic motifs of envy and mortality.
This drawing by Heinrich Aldegrever depicts the allegorical figure of Invidia, or Envy. Aldegrever was a prominent member of the Little Masters, a group of German printmakers who produced small-scale, highly detailed works during the sixteenth century. His training in the tradition of Albrecht Dürer is evident in the precise line work and the careful anatomical rendering of the figure.
The figure of Invidia is traditionally associated with specific attributes that Aldegrever includes here. She holds a serpent, a classic symbol of malice and the corrosive nature of envy. Her stance, with one foot resting upon a skull, connects the concept of envy to mortality and the inevitable decay of worldly concerns. The staff she holds adds a vertical element to the composition, balancing the swirling drapery that wraps around her form. The use of wash provides a sense of volume and shadow, giving the figure a sculptural quality despite the modest scale of the original work.
Aldegrever often explored moralising themes in his prints and drawings. By personifying abstract vices, he engaged with the intellectual climate of the Reformation-era Germany. The figure is presented with a sense of classical contrapposto, yet the expression and the inclusion of the serpent suggest a more unsettling, psychological depth. This piece offers a glimpse into the graphic techniques of the period, where the economy of line and the clarity of form were prioritised to convey complex allegorical narratives. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the image, allowing the viewer to appreciate the artist's hand and the directness of his ink strokes.
