A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, depicting Inuzaka Keno Tanetomo from the epic novel *Nansō Satomi Hakkenden*. The print showcases Kuniyoshi's skill in portraying dramatic scenes and his use of symbolism.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) depicts Inuzaka Keno Tanetomo, a character from the popular Edo-period epic novel *Nansō Satomi Hakkenden* (The Eight Dog Warriors). Kuniyoshi was a leading master of *ukiyo-e* (pictures of the floating world) during the late Edo period. He was known for his dynamic compositions and depictions of historical and mythical subjects. *Hakkenden*, written by Takizawa Bakin, tells the story of eight samurai brothers, each born with a bead representing a virtue. Inuzaka Keno Tanetomo is portrayed here in a theatrical pose, holding a sword. His robe is decorated with images of dogs, a direct reference to the story. The print shows the influence of *kabuki* theatre, with its emphasis on dramatic expression and stylised gestures. The surrounding text provides context and identifies the character within the narrative.
