A detailed ink and wash illustration by Simon Fokke depicting the 1777 royal procession in Leeuwarden.
This work by Simon Fokke captures the ceremonial entry of the Prince and Princess of Orange into Leeuwarden in 1777. As a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, Fokke was frequently commissioned to document public events and civic processions. His approach here relies on a combination of precise ink lines and tonal wash to define the depth of the scene.
The composition is organised to show the scale of the procession. In the foreground, a crowd of spectators is rendered with quick, gestural strokes, their figures partially obscured to create a sense of immediacy. Behind them, the military escort and the royal carriage move towards the town centre. The architecture of Leeuwarden is suggested through light washes, providing a backdrop that does not distract from the central action of the parade.
Fokke demonstrates a clear grasp of perspective, using the receding line of the procession to draw the eye towards the carriage. The work functions as a visual record of a specific political moment in the eighteenth-century Netherlands. It avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the movement of the figures and the atmosphere of the public gathering. The use of monochromatic ink wash allows for a focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the figures and the street, typical of the documentary style favoured by Dutch artists of the period. This print offers a view into the civic life of the era, documenting the interaction between the ruling house and the local populace during a formal state visit.
