A nineteenth-century Dutch wood engraving depicting a domestic scene of a father reading to his family, accompanied by a moralising verse.
This wood engraving, titled 'Interieur met een vader zijn gezin voorlezend', originates from the 'Prenten-Magazijn voor het Nederlandsche Volk', a nineteenth-century Dutch publication. The work depicts a domestic scene, common in the moralising literature of the era, where a father reads to his family by the hearth. The composition is structured around the central figure of the father, who sits with an open book, while his wife and child listen attentively. The setting is sparse, featuring a simple table, a kettle, and a fireplace, which serves as the primary light source for the room.
Isaac Weissenbruch, a Dutch artist, employs a linear style characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century book illustration. The hatching techniques create depth and shadow, particularly within the fireplace and the folds of the clothing. The inclusion of a biblical reference, 'Ephes. 6, vs. 4', alongside the accompanying Dutch verse, clarifies the didactic intent of the image. The text encourages fathers to prioritise home life and religious instruction over worldly distractions like taverns or card games. Such prints were produced to circulate moral values among the Dutch public, reflecting the social priorities of the time. The print remains a clear example of how visual media was utilised to reinforce domestic virtues and religious observance within the family unit. The artist's signature, 'W.f.', is visible in the lower left corner, identifying the work as part of his contribution to the magazine's series of moralising illustrations.
