A detailed engraving with watercolour by Maria Sibylla Merian, 'Inflorescence of Banana' showcases the artist's scientific accuracy and artistic talent. The print depicts the banana plant's flowering structure, alongside a moth and caterpillar.
Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Swiss naturalist, scientific illustrator, and entomologist. She was one of the first naturalists to observe insects directly. Merian's meticulous observations and detailed illustrations contributed significantly to the field of entomology. Her most important contribution was the documentation of the metamorphosis of insects. She embarked on a journey to Suriname in 1699 to study and document the insect life of the region. Her work was notable for its combination of scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. 'Inflorescence of Banana' exemplifies Merian's approach. The engraving, enhanced with watercolour, depicts the banana plant's flowering structure alongside a moth and caterpillar. The composition is carefully arranged to showcase the plant's various stages of development, from the unripe green bananas to the mature yellow fruit. The red bracts of the flower add a striking contrast to the overall colour scheme. The inclusion of insects further enriches the image, reflecting Merian's interest in the interrelationships between plants and animals.
