A serene hanging scroll by Shiokawa Bunrin, depicting an incense burner and a fan rendered in delicate ink washes on silk.
This hanging scroll by Shiokawa Bunrin presents a quiet, meditative scene. The composition centres on a small incense burner, from which thin wisps of smoke rise into the upper reaches of the silk. Beside the burner lies a flat, circular fan, its form resting on the ground plane. The artist employs the characteristic techniques of the Shijo school, which prioritised direct observation and a fluid, naturalistic approach to brushwork. The ink washes are applied with subtle gradation, creating a sense of atmosphere and depth within the limited space of the scroll.
Bunrin, a Kyoto-based painter, was known for his ability to capture the ephemeral qualities of light and air. In this work, the smoke is rendered with soft, blurred edges, contrasting with the more defined, solid form of the incense burner. The inclusion of the fan adds a human element to the scene, suggesting a moment of rest or a pause in activity. The overall mood is one of stillness, typical of the literati-influenced aesthetic prevalent in nineteenth-century Japanese painting. The artist's signature and seal are visible in the upper portion of the scroll, maintaining the balance of the vertical format. This piece demonstrates the artist's skill in managing negative space, allowing the viewer to focus on the simple, evocative objects depicted. The muted palette relies on variations of ink tone, providing a sense of harmony and restraint. It is a work that invites contemplation, reflecting the traditional appreciation for objects that carry personal or ritual significance in daily life.
