A seventeenth-century etching by Simon Guillain depicting a rosary maker at work, captured with precise line work and historical detail.
This etching by Simon Guillain, titled Incatenatore di Corone, originates from a series documenting the street vendors and tradespeople of seventeenth-century Bologna. Guillain, a French sculptor and printmaker, produced these works during his time in Italy. The image depicts a man engaged in the production of rosaries, a common sight in the religious centres of the period. He is shown with a collection of beads draped across his chest, his hands occupied with the assembly of the devotional items.
The composition is straightforward, focusing on the figure against a simple architectural backdrop. Guillain employs a clear, linear style, using hatching to define the folds of the man's clothing and the texture of the brick wall behind him. The figure stands in a relaxed posture, providing a glimpse into the daily life of a working-class artisan. The print serves as a historical record of the social fabric and economic activities of the time, capturing the specific attire and tools associated with this trade.
As a printmaker, Guillain demonstrates a precise control of the etching needle, creating a balance between the subject and the surrounding space. The work lacks unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the viewer to focus on the individual and his craft. This piece is part of a larger collection that provides insight into the diverse occupations found in the urban environments of the Baroque era. The clarity of the lines and the observational quality of the drawing reflect the artist's background in sculpture, where form and structure are paramount. This print is an example of the documentary interest that artists of the seventeenth century held for the common people and their varied livelihoods.
