A refined lithographic print depicting a young Venetian woman carrying water, captured in the academic style of Eugene de Blaas.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was an Italian painter of the Academic Classicist school. He is recognised for his depictions of Venetian life, often focusing on the daily activities of the working class. This work captures a young woman carrying water, a common subject in his oeuvre. The composition features the figure in a contrapposto stance, looking back over her shoulder towards the viewer. She carries a wooden yoke across her shoulders, balancing a metal bucket and a ceramic vessel.
The artist employs a high degree of technical precision in the rendering of the fabric, from the texture of the bodice to the layered ruffles of the skirt. The lighting is soft, creating a gentle contrast between the figure and the plain, textured wall behind her. This print, likely derived from a periodical or a collection of contemporary art, retains the decorative border elements typical of late nineteenth-century publishing.
De Blaas was born in Albano Laziale, near Rome, to an Austrian father and an Italian mother. He spent much of his career in Venice, where he became a professor at the Academy. His work often idealised the subjects he observed in the streets and canals of the city. By focusing on the grace of the figure and the mundane nature of the task, he created images that appealed to the European middle class of the period. The print demonstrates his ability to balance realistic detail with a polished, smooth finish. It serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the late Victorian era, where genre scenes of Mediterranean life were highly popular in both private homes and public exhibitions.
