A striking 1932 Constructivist photomontage poster by Gustavs Klucis, depicting industrial workers and production targets for the Soviet state.
Gustavs Klucis was a pioneer of the photomontage technique, a method he employed to great effect in his work for the Soviet state. This poster, produced in 1932, functions as a visual instrument of industrial propaganda. It depicts two workers, rendered in a monumental scale, looming over a sprawling industrial complex. The composition relies on the juxtaposition of human labour and the machinery of production, a common motif in the visual culture of the early Soviet era.
The figures are presented with a sense of directness, their tools and protective gear serving as symbols of their specific roles in the national economy. The background integrates photographic elements of factories, railways, and mining infrastructure, creating a sense of scale that suggests the collective power of the proletariat. The text, printed in bold, utilitarian typography, outlines the specific production targets for coal, pig iron, and rolled metal for the year 1933.
Klucis utilised the graphic language of Constructivism, favouring clear lines, geometric arrangements, and a limited colour palette to ensure the message remained legible to a mass audience. The work avoids unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the political directive. By combining photography with graphic design, Klucis created a visual shorthand for the rapid industrialisation of the period. This piece provides a clear example of how avant-garde techniques were adapted to serve the requirements of state-sponsored communication. The print captures the aesthetic of the era, where the artist acted as a constructor of social reality rather than a traditional painter. It remains a document of the intersection between modern art practices and the political objectives of the twentieth century.
