Albert Bierstadt, a German-born American painter, is known for his expansive depictions of the American West. This work captures the dramatic scale of the Rocky Mountains, utilising the atmospheric effects that defined his career. The composition draws the eye from the shadowed, rocky foreground, where a small bear is visible, towards the sun-drenched valley floor and the towering, snow-capped peaks that dominate the horizon. Bierstadt employed a technique of dramatic lighting, often referred to as luminism, to create a sense of awe. Shafts of light pierce through heavy, turbulent clouds, illuminating the mist rising from the distant waterfall and the valley below. This play of light and shadow provides a sense of depth, guiding the viewer through the various planes of the scene. The foreground is rendered with precise detail, from the textured rock faces to the individual pine trees, while the background dissolves into the hazy, ethereal quality of high-altitude air.
