A serene depiction of a Dutch windmill by a polder canal, capturing the soft light and expansive skies characteristic of the Hague School.

Paul Joseph Constantin Gabriël was a central figure of the Hague School, a group of artists who sought to capture the atmospheric conditions and light of the Dutch countryside. This work, known as 'In the Month of July', depicts a traditional windmill positioned beside a polder canal. The composition is dominated by a vast, cloud-filled sky that occupies the upper two-thirds of the canvas, a characteristic choice for the artist who often prioritised the interplay of light and weather over topographical precision. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to render the specific quality of Dutch light. The windmill, with its weathered structure and sails, is reflected in the still water of the canal, creating a sense of quietude. Gabriël uses a palette of muted greens, earthy browns, and soft blues to convey the humid, summer atmosphere of the lowlands. The brushwork is fluid, allowing for the soft edges of the clouds and the gentle ripples in the water to emerge without rigid definition. Unlike the dramatic lighting found in earlier Dutch Golden Age paintings, Gabriël focuses on the naturalistic observation of the environment. The inclusion of a small figure walking along the path and a distant church spire provides a sense of scale and human presence within the expansive polder. This piece is a representative example of the Hague School's approach to painting, where the focus remains on the quiet, everyday reality of the Dutch landscape. The work invites the viewer to observe the subtle shifts in tone and colour that define the summer season in the Netherlands, capturing a moment of stillness in the rural environment.
