Josephus Augustus Knip, a Dutch painter known for his precise topographical studies, produced this work during his extended residency in Italy. The drawing captures the quiet atmosphere of Genzano, a town situated in the Alban Hills south of Rome. Knip utilised a restrained palette and fine graphite lines to document the architectural and natural features of the region.

The composition focuses on a cluster of Mediterranean buildings, likely a monastery or villa, framed by the distinctive silhouettes of umbrella pines and slender cypresses.
