A refined portrait by Konstantin Makovsky depicting a woman in a straw hat with a bouquet of roses, rendered with soft, painterly brushwork.
Konstantin Makovsky was a central figure in the Russian art world during the late nineteenth century. Known for his technical facility and his ability to capture the textures of high-society life, he produced numerous portraits that reflect the aesthetic preferences of the era. This work depicts a woman in a wide-brimmed straw hat, holding a walking stick and a bouquet of roses. The composition focuses on the subject, whose attire suggests a leisurely return from an afternoon walk.
Makovsky employs a painterly technique that emphasises the tactile quality of the subject's clothing. The lace and fabric are rendered with loose, confident brushwork, allowing the light to catch the folds and patterns of the dress. The background remains soft and indistinct, which ensures the viewer's attention stays on the figure. The palette consists of muted earth tones, punctuated by the soft pinks of the flowers and the dark accents of the bows on her dress.
This painting is characteristic of Makovsky's later period, where he moved away from the social realism of the Peredvizhniki movement to focus on more decorative, romanticised subjects. His work often appealed to the tastes of the aristocracy and the wealthy merchant class, who favoured images that projected elegance and refinement. The artist's training at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg is evident in the balanced composition and the careful handling of the subject's features. The portrait captures a moment of quiet composure, typical of the genre of society portraiture that dominated much of European art at the turn of the century. It remains a clear example of the artist's skill in balancing realistic anatomical representation with a more fluid, impressionistic application of paint.
