A page spread from the 1896 Kelmscott Press edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, featuring illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones and typography by William Morris.
This print features a page spread from the Kelmscott Press edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, published in 1896. The project represents a collaboration between the artist Edward Burne-Jones and the designer William Morris. Burne-Jones provided the figurative illustrations, while Morris designed the surrounding borders, initials, and typography. The aesthetic reflects the movement's interest in medieval manuscript traditions, prioritising a unified page design where text and image exist in harmony. The left page displays a title block framed by dense, vine-like foliage. The right page contains a smaller illustration depicting a figure in a landscape, positioned above a large, decorative initial letter. The text is set in the Chaucer typeface, a font created by Morris specifically for this publication. The borders are filled with repeating patterns of leaves and grapes, demonstrating the characteristic density of the Kelmscott style. Every element, from the weight of the ink to the placement of the margins, was considered to create a cohesive visual experience. Burne-Jones drew the figures in pencil, which were then transferred to woodblocks by W.H. Hooper. The resulting engravings maintain the delicacy of the original sketches while adapting to the requirements of the printing press. This work is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the Kelmscott Press output. It demonstrates the technical precision and stylistic unity that defined the late Victorian private press movement. The print offers a view into the meticulous craftsmanship of the period, where the book is treated as a singular object of art rather than a purely functional item.
