A detailed 1889 woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunitoshi depicting the Imperial Carriage procession in Meiji-era Tokyo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunitoshi, dated 1889, captures a significant moment in Japanese history during the Meiji period. The work depicts the Imperial Carriage, or Gohōren, as it travels through the streets of Tokyo. The scene serves as a visual record of the modernisation efforts occurring in Japan at the time, blending traditional Japanese motifs with Western-influenced military uniforms and architectural elements.
The composition is a triptych, a common format for Ukiyo-e artists to present expansive historical narratives. On the right, the ornate carriage, topped with a golden phoenix, carries the Emperor. The carriage is surrounded by a procession of guards dressed in Western-style military attire, reflecting the rapid adoption of European customs during the Meiji Restoration. The background features the stone walls of the Imperial Palace and the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance, providing a sense of place and national identity.
Kunitoshi, a student of the Utagawa school, demonstrates a keen eye for detail in the rendering of the carriage wheels, the uniforms of the soldiers, and the architectural features of the palace moat. The colour palette is balanced, using muted earth tones for the stone and ground, contrasted by the bright red of the carriage and the uniforms. The print functions as a documentary piece, recording the visual shift in the Japanese capital as it transitioned into a modern state. The inclusion of gas lamps and Western-style bridges further emphasises this period of change. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of traditional woodblock printing techniques and the new, modernised reality of late nineteenth-century Japan.
