A refined ink wash illustration by Zhang Ruitu, depicting a scene from Su Shi’s classic literature with characteristic angular brushwork and sparse composition.
This work by Zhang Ruitu, a prominent calligrapher and painter of the late Ming period, depicts a scene inspired by the literary classic, the Second Rhapsody on Red Cliff by the Song dynasty poet Su Shi. Zhang Ruitu is recognised for his distinct, angular brushwork, which often deviates from the softer, more rounded styles prevalent in traditional Chinese ink wash painting. In this composition, the artist employs a dry, rhythmic application of ink to define the craggy rock formations and the skeletal, leafless trees that populate the scene.
The imagery captures a moment of quiet contemplation, reflecting the themes of solitude and nature found in Su Shi’s original text. A small, solitary figure is positioned on a high ledge, overlooking the rugged terrain below. The composition is sparse, prioritising the interplay between the negative space of the paper and the stark, calligraphic lines of the ink. This approach creates a sense of atmospheric depth without relying on complex shading or colour. The verticality of the cliffs and the starkness of the trees draw the eye across the scroll, guiding the viewer through the desolate yet composed environment.
Zhang Ruitu’s style is often associated with the individualist tendencies of late Ming artists who sought to express personal temperament through their craft. The inclusion of calligraphic inscriptions on the left side of the work integrates the visual and the literary, a hallmark of the scholar-official tradition. The print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original ink, preserving the texture of the brushstrokes and the aged quality of the paper. This piece offers a view into the aesthetic priorities of the seventeenth-century Chinese literati, where the economy of line and the expression of mood were held in high regard.
