This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniteru captures a moment of rapid technological change during the early Meiji period. The work depicts the arrival of steam-powered rail transport in Japan, specifically the line running through Takanawa in Tokyo. The composition is a triptych, a common format for ukiyo-e artists to present expansive scenes of modern infrastructure and public activity.
In the foreground, a steam locomotive pulls a series of carriages, rendered with the distinct colour palette and graphic sensibility of the era. The train is juxtaposed against traditional elements of the Tokyo environment, including stone embankments, pine trees, and horse-drawn carriages on the upper level. The artist documents the coexistence of traditional transport methods and the new industrial machinery that would soon transform the nation.
