A detailed Meiji-era woodblock print depicting the arrival of the steam locomotive in Tokyo, capturing the intersection of traditional life and industrial progress.
This triptych woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniteru captures the arrival of modern technology in Japan during the early Meiji period. The work depicts a steam locomotive passing through the Shiodome area of Tokyo, which served as the terminus for the first railway line connecting the capital to Yokohama. The print belongs to the genre known as kaika-e, or pictures of enlightenment, which documented the rapid westernisation and industrialisation of Japanese society.
Kuniteru employs a clear, narrative style to record the novelty of the train. The composition is divided across three panels, allowing for a wide view of the locomotive, its carriages, and the surrounding station architecture. The artist contrasts the traditional Japanese pine tree on the left with the rigid, Western-style masonry of the station building on the right. Figures in the foreground are depicted in a mix of traditional kimono and Western-style clothing, reflecting the social transition occurring at the time. The locomotive emits a plume of dark smoke, a visual marker of industrial progress that fascinated contemporary audiences.
The colour palette is characteristic of Meiji-era prints, utilising synthetic aniline dyes that became available in Japan during this period. These pigments allowed for bolder, more saturated tones than the vegetable-based dyes of earlier decades. The print serves as a visual record of the Shiodome station, which was designed by American architect Richard Bridgens. By documenting the physical infrastructure of the railway, Kuniteru provides a specific historical account of the transformation of Tokyo into a modern metropolis. The inclusion of the flag and the precise rendering of the train carriages demonstrate the artist's interest in the technical details of foreign machinery, which were then being integrated into the Japanese urban environment.
