The composition features the wise man presenting the magical bird to King Dodon, set against a backdrop of a stylised Russian city with onion domes.

Bilibin employed a distinct technique that draws heavily from traditional Russian woodblock prints and icon painting. The image is defined by clear, black ink outlines that contain the flat, muted colour fields.
