A striking black and white ink illustration by Ivan Bilibin, featuring two crows in flight and a fallen warrior, created for Pushkin's poem 'Two Crows'.
This work by Ivan Bilibin comprises two distinct graphic elements created for Alexander Pushkin's poem 'Two Crows'. The upper panel depicts two birds in flight against a backdrop of stylised clouds, while the lower panel shows a fallen warrior amidst vegetation. Bilibin, a central figure in the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement, developed a distinct graphic language that drew heavily from traditional Russian folk art and medieval manuscript illumination.
The composition relies on a rigorous use of line and high-contrast black and white forms. Bilibin employs a technique reminiscent of woodblock printing, where every texture, from the feathers of the crows to the chainmail of the fallen soldier, is rendered through precise, repetitive mark-making. This approach flattens the pictorial space, prioritising decorative clarity over three-dimensional realism. The clouds are reduced to rhythmic, swirling patterns, and the foliage in the lower scene is treated as a dense, graphic carpet.
Bilibin's work for Pushkin's literature is recognised for its synthesis of historical motifs and modern graphic design. By stripping away tonal shading, he forces the viewer to engage with the silhouette and the structural integrity of the forms. The result is an image that functions as both a narrative accompaniment and a self-contained decorative object. This print captures the specific aesthetic of the Russian Silver Age, where artists sought to revive national traditions through a refined, modern lens. The starkness of the ink work ensures that the emotional weight of the poem, which deals with themes of mortality and nature, is conveyed through the tension between the active birds and the static, prone figure below.
