Description
A seminal work of Metaphysical Art by Carlo Carrà, featuring a stark, silent mill and a stylized animal in a dreamlike, suspended environment.
Il mulino di Sant'Anna, painted by Carlo Carrà in 1926, represents the artist's transition into the period of Metaphysical Art. Following his early involvement with Futurism, Carrà shifted his focus toward a more static, silent, and dreamlike representation of reality. This work displays the characteristic elements of his mature style: a simplified, almost archaic geometry and a sense of suspended time.
The composition features a stark, monolithic mill structure set against a horizon that feels both vast and claustrophobic. In the foreground, a stylized, white animal stands in profile, its form reduced to essential lines. To the left, a bare, skeletal tree echoes the stillness of the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy ochres, muted greens, and a heavy, dark sky that suggests an impending storm or a twilight state. The shadows are long and unnatural, typical of the Metaphysical approach, which sought to reveal the hidden, mysterious nature of everyday objects by placing them in unfamiliar, quiet contexts.
Carrà's technique here avoids the frantic energy of his earlier works. Instead, he employs smooth brushwork and clear outlines to define the volumes of the building and the creature. The lack of human presence adds to the sense of isolation. By stripping away unnecessary detail, the artist invites the viewer to contemplate the objecthood of the mill and the animal. This painting is a clear example of the Italian Novecento movement's interest in returning to order and classical structure, while maintaining the unsettling, psychological depth that defined Carrà's contribution to modern European art.
