Lucebert, born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk, was a central figure in the Dutch post-war avant-garde. As a poet and painter, he operated within the CoBrA movement, which prioritised spontaneous expression and a rejection of traditional aesthetic constraints. Ierse sage, or Irish Saga, reflects his characteristic approach to form, where figures emerge from a chaotic interplay of ink and wash. The composition avoids rigid structure, instead favouring a fluid, almost primal arrangement of shapes that suggest mythological or narrative origins without resorting to literal representation.

The work employs a monochromatic palette, relying on the contrast between deep, opaque blacks and translucent grey washes. This technique allows for a sense of depth and texture, as the ink bleeds into the paper fibres. The lines are calligraphic and erratic, tracing the boundaries of ambiguous forms that seem to shift under the viewer's gaze.
