A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, depicting an Irish horseman and a Spanish gentleman in traditional period attire.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, a Dutch artist active in Antwerp, belongs to a series documenting the diverse costumes and figures of the sixteenth century. The work presents two distinct figures: an Irish horseman and a Spanish gentleman. The Irish rider is depicted in motion, mounted on a horse, with his attire and weaponry reflecting contemporary European perceptions of the Irish as wild or untamed. The Spanish gentleman, by contrast, is shown with the rigid posture and formal dress associated with the nobility of the period, including a ruff and structured doublet.
De Bruyn was a prolific engraver who produced numerous plates documenting the dress of various nations and social classes. His work provides a visual record of how different cultures were perceived and categorised during the late sixteenth century. The engraving technique employs fine lines to define the textures of the clothing, the musculature of the horse, and the facial features of the subjects. The composition is split, allowing for a direct comparison between the two figures. Despite the significant paper loss and degradation surrounding the central images, the remaining impressions retain the clarity of the original copperplate work. The Latin and Dutch inscriptions accompanying the figures identify their origins, serving as a guide for the viewer. This print is a specimen of the ethnographic and costume studies that gained popularity among collectors and scholars during the Renaissance, reflecting an interest in the variety of human appearance across the continent. The work remains a primary source for historians studying the sartorial habits and cultural stereotypes of the era.
