This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Ichimura Takenojo VIII, a figure of the Edo period theatre scene. Produced by Torii Kiyotomo, the work belongs to the Torii school, which maintained a close association with the kabuki theatres of the time. The artist employs the yakusha-e style, focusing on the portrayal of actors in their stage roles.
The composition features the actor in a dynamic pose, wearing a large straw hat and holding a shamisen, a three-stringed musical instrument. The figure is rendered with bold, calligraphic lines that define the contours of the kimono and the posture of the actor. The colour palette is restricted, relying on black, muted red, and ochre tones, which is characteristic of early hand-coloured or limited-palette prints from this era. The kimono features geometric patterns, including a hexagonal motif, which adds visual texture to the flat, two-dimensional space.
Torii Kiyotomo captures the essence of the actor through a stylised approach rather than realistic portraiture. The facial features are minimal, yet they convey the specific aesthetic conventions of the kabuki stage.
