Shunei was a student of Katsukawa Shunsho and became a prominent figure in the Katsukawa school, which focused on realistic portrayals of actors rather than the idealised figures common in earlier ukiyo-e works. This specific print belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which translates to actor prints, serving as a form of celebrity portraiture for the theatre-going public of Edo-period Japan.
The composition is defined by the bold, confident lines characteristic of Shunei's style. The actor is shown in a dynamic stance, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword, conveying a sense of tension and readiness. The costume features geometric patterns, including a hexagonal motif on the outer garment, which adds visual texture to the figure.
