A striking woodblock print by Shunshosai Hokuchō depicting actor Ichikawa Ebijūrō II in a dramatic Kabuki performance pose.
This woodblock print by Shunshosai Hokuchō captures the actor Ichikawa Ebijūrō II in the role of Horiguchi Manzaemon. The scene originates from the Kabuki production Eight Views of the Kizu River by Boating Song. Hokuchō, a prominent figure in the Osaka school of printmakers, focused his work on the theatrical world of the Kamigata region. His style differs from the Edo school through a more realistic approach to facial features and a specific emphasis on the physical intensity of the performance.
The composition employs a stark, dark background to isolate the figures, forcing the viewer to focus on the dynamic posture of the actor. Ebijūrō II is depicted in a mid-action stance, wielding a sword with a sense of urgency. The white kimono, decorated with a blue leaf pattern, provides a visual contrast against the dark void of the stage setting. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Osaka woodblock tradition, where the carving of the blocks allowed for fine detail in the fabric patterns and the expressive lines of the actor's face.
In the context of nineteenth-century Japanese theatre, such prints functioned as souvenirs for audiences, documenting specific performances and the physical appearance of popular actors. The inclusion of the actor's name and the play title within the print serves as a record of the production. Hokuchō's work remains a primary source for understanding the aesthetic conventions of the Kamigata Kabuki stage. The print avoids unnecessary ornamentation, relying instead on the tension of the pose and the clarity of the graphic design to convey the drama of the scene.
