A sombre, atmospheric depiction of a council meeting inside a tipi, painted by Frederic Remington in 1909.
Frederic Remington painted I Will Tell the White Man in 1909, the final year of his life. This work represents a shift in his approach to the American West, moving away from the action-oriented scenes of his earlier career toward a more sombre, atmospheric style. The composition depicts a council meeting held inside a tipi, where a lone figure stands to address the seated group of men.
The scene relies on a restricted palette, dominated by deep shadows and muted tones. Light enters from the top of the tipi, illuminating the central speaker and the circle of listeners. This use of chiaroscuro creates a sense of gravity and quiet tension. Remington captures the textures of the participants' clothing, from the heavy furs in the foreground to the varied headgear and blankets worn by those in the circle.
By this stage in his career, Remington had developed a looser, more painterly technique. He applied paint with visible brushwork, prioritising the overall mood and the play of light over precise detail. The circular arrangement of the figures draws the viewer into the space, creating an immersive experience of the council. The work reflects the artist's interest in the cultural dynamics of the Plains Indians, presented with a focus on the solemnity of the moment. It remains a significant example of his late-period work, where he moved toward a more impressionistic handling of light and shadow to convey the atmosphere of the frontier.
