A detailed photochrom print of the Hymen Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone, captured by William Henry Jackson in the late nineteenth century.
This image captures the Hymen Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park. Produced as a photochrom, the work utilises a process that adds colour to black and white photographic negatives through multiple lithographic stones. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, visited Yellowstone multiple times, and his images were instrumental in the public perception of the region during the late nineteenth century.
The composition draws the eye across the tiered mineral deposits, which display a range of earthy tones created by thermophilic bacteria and mineral precipitation. The foreground shows the delicate, scalloped edges of the travertine pools, while the background provides a view of the surrounding hills and the sparse structures of the early park development. The light is clear, typical of the high-altitude environment, and the colour application provides a specific, slightly surreal quality characteristic of the photochrom technique.
Jackson worked extensively for the Detroit Photographic Company, which mass-produced these prints for the tourist market. The work functions as a historical record of the geological formations before modern conservation efforts altered the accessibility and appearance of the site. The print captures the scale of the geological activity, contrasting the small human-made buildings in the distance with the vast, natural terraces. It remains a document of the nineteenth-century fascination with the American wilderness and the technical ingenuity of early colour reproduction.
