A detail from Gustav Klimt's rejected University of Vienna ceiling painting, 'Medicine', this artwork depicts Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, in Klimt's signature Art Nouveau style, featuring rich colours and decorative patterns.
This is a detail of Hygieia from Gustav Klimt's commission for ceiling paintings in the Great Hall of the University of Vienna. Klimt began the commission in 1900, and the paintings were eventually rejected in 1907 for being too radical. The commission was originally intended to represent the fields of philosophy, medicine, and jurisprudence. Klimt's interpretations were considered controversial for their symbolism and departure from traditional academic art. The paintings were later destroyed in 1945 during World War II. Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, is depicted in a stylised manner, typical of Klimt's Art Nouveau style. She is adorned with gold jewellery and a patterned red and gold robe. A serpent, a symbol associated with healing and medicine, is wrapped around her arm. The composition is relatively flat, with a focus on decorative elements and the figure's frontal pose. The colour palette is dominated by red and gold, creating a warm and opulent effect.
