A dramatic nineteenth-century engraving by Edward Goodall, capturing a group of figures caught in the intensity of a desert storm.
Edward Goodall, a prominent British engraver of the nineteenth century, is widely recognised for his technical precision and his frequent collaborations with J.M.W. Turner. This work, titled Hurricane in the Desert, demonstrates the atmospheric control typical of the period. The composition focuses on a small group of figures and animals huddled against the overwhelming force of a sandstorm. The artist employs delicate hatching and stippling to render the swirling, opaque mass of the storm, which occupies the majority of the visual field.
By isolating the subjects within a vast, empty expanse of paper, Goodall creates a sense of vulnerability. The light source, a pale orb obscured by the tempest, provides a singular point of contrast against the darker, dense lines used to depict the wind and sand. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the human element and the natural environment. This approach reflects the Romantic fascination with the sublime, where nature is portrayed as an uncontrollable and often terrifying power.
Goodall’s mastery of the burin and needle is evident in the subtle gradations of tone, which transition from the deep shadows of the storm to the lighter, more sparse areas of the desert floor. The work functions as a narrative illustration, likely intended for a literary volume or a travelogue of the era. It captures a fleeting moment of crisis with clarity and restraint. The print remains a fine example of the illustrative techniques employed by British engravers during the mid-nineteenth century, prioritising mood and atmospheric effect over rigid anatomical accuracy.
