A delicate woodblock print from the 1797 manual Sōka ryakugashiki by Kuwagata Keisai, featuring simplified botanical studies of a peony and a flowering plant.
This woodblock print originates from the instructional manual Sōka ryakugashiki, published in 1797 by the artist Kuwagata Keisai. Keisai, who also worked under the name Kitao Masayoshi, was a prominent figure in the Edo period, known for his ability to distill complex forms into essential, recognisable shapes. This work reflects the pedagogical approach of the era, where artists sought to teach the public how to capture the essence of nature through simplified brushwork and minimal colour application.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, each presenting a specific botanical subject. On the left, a peony is rendered with muted tones, focusing on the structure of the petals and the arrangement of the foliage. On the right, a flowering plant, likely a type of mustard or cruciferous vegetable, is depicted with a lighter, more airy touch. The use of negative space is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the economy of line and the balance of the ink wash. The printing process employs a limited palette of soft greens, earthy browns, and pale yellows, which complements the texture of the traditional Japanese paper.
Keisai’s style in this manual is characterised by a departure from the highly detailed realism found in some contemporary botanical studies. Instead, he prioritises the rhythm of the stroke and the clarity of the silhouette. This approach was intended to make the practice of drawing accessible to a wider audience, moving away from rigid academic traditions. The print serves as a record of the aesthetic values of the late eighteenth century, where the observation of the natural world was mediated through a lens of stylistic restraint and technical precision. The work remains a fine example of the intersection between instructional art and the broader Ukiyo-e tradition.
