Kuwagata Keisai, also known as Kitao Masayoshi, produced this instructional manual during the Edo period. The work, titled Jinbutsu ryakugashiki, demonstrates a method for rendering human figures through simplified, abbreviated forms. This approach reflects the artist's interest in distilling complex subjects into their essential visual components, a technique that gained popularity among amateur artists and students of the time.
The print features a series of vignettes arranged across the page. Each figure is constructed with minimal ink strokes, prioritising economy of line over anatomical precision. The artist employs a muted palette of soft blues, greens, and greys, applied with a light touch that allows the texture of the paper to remain visible. These figures occupy a neutral space, free from background detail, which directs the viewer's attention to the posture and gesture of each subject.
